A 9-year-old Indian boy hanged himself after he was rejected in auditions for several television dance shows, news reports said Sunday. Sandip Mondal had auditioned for several television reality dance shows, but failed to make the cut, the Indian Express newspaper reported.
The son of a small DVD and CD rental shop-owner in the eastern city of Kolkata, Mondal had never received any formal dance training as his parents were not well-off. When the boy asked his mother for money to go to yet another audition on Friday, she refused, saying they could not afford it and left for work, the Indian Express reported.
When the mother returned in the evening, she found her son's body hanging from the ceiling. "Sandip learned to dance by watching TV. In the last few months, he auditioned for five to six reality shows but was not selected ... He was depressed as we were told by his neighbours," a local police official was quoted as saying.
Several entertainment channels in India run competitive dance shows where the participants are often as young as 5 or 6 years old. An 11-year-old girl from Mumbai, who had appeared on several television dance shows, allegedly committed suicide in January after her parents pulled her out of dance school as they felt it was affecting her schoolwork.
