India's Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group said Friday it had identified the brokers it claims spread "baseless sensational charges" that sent its firms' share prices plunging this week. The group, led by Indian billionaire Anil Ambani, has now called for a full probe by the regulator and punishment of anyone found guilty.
"We have identified stock brokers sending mass e-mails, SMSs, voice calls with baseless sensational charges against the ADA Group," it said in a statement. The information has been passed on to the Securities and Exchange Board of India regulator, the Mumbai police and cybercrime unit, the statement added.
ADA did not disclose details of the brokerages it claims are involved. On Wednesday, shares in Ambani's six publicly traded firms lost $2.6 billion in market value, according to stock exchange data, as rumours swirled that India's top accounting firm was looking into the group's finances. Among the group's big losers, flagship mobile phone unit Reliance Communications fell more than 14 percent while Reliance Infrastructure saw a 20 percent drop.
