Minor changes were witnessed on the currency market on Monday as the rupee fluctuated marginally versus dollar and euro, dealers said. The rupee fell by three paisa against dollar at 85.52 for buying and shed two paisa for selling at 85.56, they said.
INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: In the first Asian trade euro recovered a tad on Asian buying after lunar new year holidays, though it remained on shaky ground after a jump in US Treasury yields undermined its yield advantage. With many market players still seen caught in euro long positions, the euro risks extending a retreat from last week's 12-week high that started after the head of the European Central Bank sounded less concerned about inflation than many expected.
A rise in January US payrolls shown in data released on Friday was much smaller than expected, but traders concluded the figure was affected by severe snow storms and instead focused on a sharp drop in the jobless rate.
Indian rupee was trading at Rs 45.59 versus dollar, Malaysian ringgit was at 3.0380 in terms of the greenback and Chinese yuan was available at 6.5938 against dollar.
The Indian rupee steadied on Monday after rising early, tracking the domestic share market and some dollar inflows, but traders expected it to remain range bound during the day.
At 11:15 am (0545 GMT), the partially convertible rupee was at 45.5550/5600 per dollar, after rising to 45.5350 in early deals. It had ended at 45.60/61 per dollar on Friday.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee was unchanged against dollar for buying at 85.70 while it rose by 10 paisa for selling at 85.80, they added. The rupee held its firmness versus euro, rising 20 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 115.95 and Rs 116.45, they said.
