Families whose homes were destroyed in the floods have now found emergency shelter beneath the canvas of ShelterBox tents after 1,900 ShelterBox tents were distributed in Kyber Pukhtunkhawa, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan in the past few days. Aid for 1,900 families worth one million dollar (Rs 85 millions) have been delivered and 5,000 tents are on its way thanks to ShelterBox Trust UK.
Each ShelterBox disaster relief tent can house an extended family of up to 10 people. The tents undergo rigorous testing in wind and rain tunnels and can withstand extremes of high and low temperatures. Shelterbox are partnering in Pakistan with the NRSP (National Rural Support Programme) in Northern Pakistan with Pakistan Red Crescent Society Sindh Provincial Branch in Sindh and with local administration in Balochistan.
They have delivered the aid to families who have been rescued from Pakistan's worst floods in living memory. ShelterBox execution in disaster struck areas and regions arc also being monitored by Rotary Clubs to ensure proper and timely implementation. Since 2005, ShelterBox has worked in Pakistan in response to earthquakes, conflict, flooding, cyclones and landslides, and have given millions of dollars support to people in Pakistan.
ShelterBox have also dispatched sending 10,000 water filtration units and 5,000 water carriers to Pakistan in response to the need for clean water. The LifeStraws and water carriers are being flown out this week and will join the 1,900 ShelterBox tents already deployed in the country and we target another 5,000 SheltcrBoxes tents many of them are on their way to Pakistan.
A family-sized water filtration unit or LifeStraw can filter a minimum of 18,000 litres of water - providing safe and potentially life-saving drinking water for displaced families. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable without clean drinking water and there has been a reported significant increase in diarrhea, dysentery and other diseases with a cholera epidemic, the worst case scenario.
"LifeStraws make dirty water safe to drink. They are an essential bit of kit that we normally put in ShelterBox packs and they will make a huge difference to those affected by the flooding. ShelterBox plans to send many more as soon as possible as the health risks from drinking dirty water are so huge." The total support by ShelterBox Trust UK at present planned is worth 7.5 million rupees (Pak Rs 635 million).-PR
