WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday welcomed the meeting between Pakistani and Indian prime ministers on the sidelines of SAARC summit, saying cooperation between the two regional powers will be beneficial for all countries in the key region.
Deputy Spokesman at the State Department Mark Toner said Washington sees the meeting between Pakistani and Indian leaders as "beneficial" and "win-win" for the two countries and the entire region.
He was commenting hours after Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh discussed bilateral relations in the Maldives at the start of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit.
Their meeting emanated a message of peace and cooperation in the region, which, in the past, often witnessed lingering sharp differences on peace and security issues that sometimes spiralled into conflicts.
The United States and China are attending the meeting in Addu, Maldives, as observers. Since the start of Afghan conflict in 2001 Washington has maintained a high-stakes engagement in the region, particularly with nuclear powers Pakistan and India.
