Lawyers observe Black Day

KARACHI: The legal fraternity on Thursday observed a black day to denounce the former military dictator Pervez Musharraf’s unconstitutional step imposing emergency rule and boycotted courts proceedings countrywide.

Karachi Bar Council also marked Nov 3 as a black day and proceedings in five districts including city court and high court remained closed in the wake of lawyers boycott call. Black flags on bar councils and associations were also flown and also held general body meetings.

Lawyers condemned Musharraf’s illegal action as a president of Pakistan to clamp down on judiciary, making judges dysfunctional and suspended the country’s law by imposing emergency rule on Nov 3, 2007.  They said the lawyers’ community would always mark Nov 3 as a black day to denounce the dictator’s illegal actions.

They also criticised the incumbent government of failing to provide basic amenities to the people and solver their long-standing problems. They vowed to defend the democracy from forced collapse.
