In order to protect citizens specially the children from preventable diseases, the government has evolved a comprehensive strategy while an action plan has already been launched under the President's Clean and Safe Water Supply Programme under which 1,000 water supply schemes were being completed in the province at a cost of Rs 5 billion.
Punjab Health Minister, Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal said here on Friday that huge amount of Rs 15 billion would be spent for the supply of safe and clean drinking water to the masses during the period of three years and 6,000 clean/ safe drinking water plants would be set up by the end of the year.
The minister said that the government was giving top priority to the supply of clean and safe drinking water to the people, as it was essential for human health and to prevent the spread of fatal diseases like hepatitis, gastro and typhoid etc, whereas, water testing laboratories would also be set up even in the small towns of the province in this regard.
Talking about child heath, he was of the view that through introducing preventive school vaccination programme we can protect children from gastro, hepatitis, typhoid and other water born diseases. He said that the government will ensure supply of standardised and pure food stuff to the citizens and relevant laws will be strictly implemented.
He said that the use of petrochemical colours in food items are hazardous for human health specially the child health, however, he said that it is the common responsibility of doctors, teachers and parents to play their effective role for creating awareness among the general public about diseases.
'No one will be allowed to make money at the cost of human lives. The procedure of sample testing laboratory would be made more effective and speedy so that legal action could be taken against those responsible of adulteration, as the violation of hygienic principles in food stuff were causing a number of dangerous diseases even cancer', he said.
