Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) became the first organisation in the corporate sector to voluntarily initiate a relief effort on a fast track basis aimed at mitigating the sufferings of the people of Balochistan and Sindh who have become the victims of one of the worst floods to strike the mountainous, coastal areas and plains of the two provinces in recent years.
The recent flash floods were triggered by cyclone Yemyin and the torrential rains. More than one million people have been affected by floods since Cyclone Yemyin struck the region late June.
In keeping up with its past traditions, on the instructions of its MD, Munawar Baseer Ahmad, the company management on war footing dispatched trucks full of relief goods worth Rs 3.2 million to the affected areas of Balochistan and Sindh. Ismail Industries and Continental Biscuits also supported the SSGC's relief efforts by sponsoring packs of chips and biscuits. In addition, shipment also included biscuits, spices, candles and other urgently needed supplies.
Family ration packs for the victims of Turbat and Ormara have already been handed over to the Coast Guards for distribution to the deserving families through helicopters and other means of transport. Another 200 family ration packs were handed over to district Nazims of Thatta and Gadap.
The trucks containing relief items were distributed to the respective authorities under the supervision of senior company officials. Munawar Baseer Ahmad, MD, SSGC has appealed to all the company executives and employees to come forward and donate one day or more salary towards the flood relief efforts in the affected areas.
It is expected that through this exercise the SSGC employees would be contributing approximately Rs 0.6 million towards the rehabilitation of affected people.-PR
