The entire Makran Coastal Highway (MCH) will be cleared for traffic between Karachi and Gwadar, within a day or two, after completion of temporary reconstruction work on the damaged far and home banks of the approach roads of different bridges and culverts situated on the Highway.
This was stated by Brigadier Falak Sher of Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), while talking to newsmen at Aghore Bridge, Balochistan. A visiting team of newsmen witnessed the ongoing temporary reconstruction activities on Makran Coastal Highway (MCH), being carried out by FWO at various spots. Brigadier Falak Sher said some 90 percent reconstruction work of the MCH damaged portions has been completed.
He pointed out that seven to eight kilometers long portion, out of total 545 kilometers MCH stretching from Karachi to Gwadar, was washed away due to the heavy rain and flood on June 28, adding, the Highway was washed away at eight different points.
Brigadier Falak, who is supervising the entire reconstruction, informed that the small portion of the approach roads were washed away from the far and home banks of Aghore intersection situated on MCH, some 223 kilometers from Karachi. On the next day of the rain and flood, deployment of two units of FWO was ordered and the reconstruction activities were initiated on MCH, simultaneously from Karachi and Gawadar sides, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Major Mobashir of Pakistan Coast Guards (PCG) said a portion of 500 meters of the Aghore intersection from its far bank was washed away in the rain and flood. He apprised that some 60 vehicles including 20 passenger buses and some 350 people had remained stranded for three days, between Aghore Bridge and Milan Culvert, on MCH due to washing away the portions of Highway.
He said the stranded people were evacuated by the Coast Guards while during the 4-day period they were also provided food and medicine. He said portions of the approach roads were also washed away from the far and home banks of Milan Culverts, situated in Balochistan on MCH, some 258 kilometers from Karachi. Earlier, the newsmen also witnessed the ongoing temporary reconstruction activities at far and home banks of Phor Nallah, some 175 kilometers from Karachi.
