The District Council Khairpur passed a budget of Rs 4,357,190,444 million for the district for the year 2007-08 on Wednesday. Zila Nazim Khairpur, Pir Niaz Shah Jillani, presenting the budget during the budget session, said the total receipts were worth Rs 4,357,190,444 million, while expenditures were Rs 4,352,090,444 million.
The Nazim said there was no new tax in the budget, terming it people-friendly, adding that several development schemes would be initiated in the district. The District Nazim said Rs 450 million had been allocated for the development of the district, while Rs 250 million had been allocated for the Citizen Community Boards, adding that there were about 113 women CCBs in Khairpur.
He said his government was giving top priority to health and education sectors, adding that Rs 441 million was allocated for health and education, besides provision of missing facilities. He said now the district government had separately allocated funds for educational institutions, including Rs 500,000 each for higher secondary schools, 300,000 for high schools and 100,000 for primary schools.
The Nazim said Rs 12 million was allocated for upgrading schools and Rs 2.5 was earmarked to provide scholarships to brilliant students to continue their studies.
Niaz Shah said when he assumed the charge of the district Nazim he was told that about 400 schools of Khairpur were closed due to a shortage of teaching staff.
With the assistance of the NCHD, Education Sector Reform Assistance (Esra), HDS and Unicef about 270 teachers were recruited on merit and the closed schools were reopened, he added. He said the Unicef had agreed to appoint 100 female teachers at the end of July.
