The Senate committee on rules of procedure and privileges met here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of senator Colonel Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi (Retd). The committee revised and amended various rules of procedure and conduct of business in the senate, 1988 by consensus.
The chairman lauded the members of the committee for showing interest, satisfactory input and contributions in streamlining the rules of procedure. The chairman stressed that supremacy of the parliament, which was one of the state pillars, must be maintained at all costs.
He added that only a strong parliament could deliver services to the oppressed and suffering masses in a better way. He further said such steps would ensure greater and more active participation of all members in legislation and establish healthy democratic norms and practices in the country.
Earlier, the committee expressed its grief and sorrow over the loss of life and damage to property caused by devastating floods in Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP. Members of the committee sympathised with the victims of the tragedy and prayed to Almighty Allah to mitigate their sufferings.
They urged the relief agencies to reach out to the victims and further expedite relief efforts. The committee members offered Fateha for those who lost their lives in the devastating rains.
The meeting was attended by senators Professor Khurshid Ahmad, Dr Khalid Ranja, Raza Muhammad Raza, Saadia Abbasi, Kamran Murtaza, Naeem Hussain Chattha, Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar Bhinder and Muhammad Ismail Buledi, Dr Sher Afgan, Minster for parliamentary affairs and senior officers of the ministries of parliamentary affairs and law were also present.
