The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced to extend the display period of electoral rolls for 15 days; July 18, 2007 in order to enlist maximum number of eligible voters. Earlier, it had displayed fresh computerised electoral rolls for 21 days at 45,403 display centers across the country for removal of errors pointed out by the public.
Poor response was witnessed during the display period therefore it was decided to continue this process for fifteen days further. Different factors had to face hindrances in the registration of new votes and correction of errors in the existing voter lists.
The EC has designed a cumbersome procedure for the registration of new votes that includes an appearance of the voter in front of a civil judge and due this condition people avoid to get their names registered. Another condition of Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) has also left countless people out of voter lists.
National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has capacity of preparing 90,000 cards daily. But it is not working to its full capacity and preparing only 20,000 CNIC cards. The minimum fee for a CNIC by NADRA is Rs 75, thus how can the poor having four or five family members bear these charges for the attainment of new CNIC and he does not care about the registration of votes.
The EC decided to opt for door-to-door enumeration of voters instead of using the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) database as a benchmark. But the work done by its officials carry countless errors, which made people disinterested during display period.
