The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed sorrows over the lost opportunity or lukewarm government's response to learn lessons from Thailand's experience in the field of boi-gas energy development.
In a report KCCI has said that Thailand is already working to double its existing grid capacity by 2016 with special emphasis on promotion of biomass and other renewable power projects under the "small power production programme". Biogas, produced from animal and plant wastes, is a low tech and very cheap source of energy.
Pakistan being an agriculture-based country with more than 66 percent of population in the rural areas, can develop biogas technology at reasonable level. If not for large industrial units at least it could be a very cheap source of energy for cottage and small industry operating mostly in the rural areas and scanty towns of major cities.
