The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leaders Dr Waseem Akhtar, Rao Muhammad Zafar, Kanwar Muhammad Siddique on Sunday demanded the formation of an impartial interim government to ensure free and fair elections in the country, adding that its components should be barred from contesting the elections.
Talking to newsmen here they said that Caravan "Estihkam-i-Pakistan" will be warmly accorded at Multan on July 2nd. The caravan will be accorded historic reception at Chowk Kumharanwala, Daulat Gate, Hussain Agahi, and Ghanta Ghar where MMA leaders Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and others will address the general public.
This caravan will leave for Dera Ghazi Khan via Muzaffarabad, Shershah, Muzaffargarh, Basira, Karam-dad Qureshi, Ghazi Ghat and a public address will be held in D.G.Khan.
They said that the intervention of army, defence and civil agencies was smudging the country's image and should end immediately. They also expressed their concern over the increasing influence of foreign-funded international NGOs in the electoral process.
They termed the eight-year stint of General Pervez Musharraf in power the "darkest era of country's history" which was marked by flagrant breach of the constitution and violation of the rule of law. They urged opposition parties to unite because only then would they be capable of frustrating the "unethical and unconstitutional re-election of General Musharraf" through the sitting assemblies.
