The Supreme Court has accepted the appeal of the 'She Couple', suspended judgement of the Lahore High Court and released them on bail here on Thursday. A two-member bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Rana Baghwandas and Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan heard an appeal of the two girls who had decided to live as a couple.
A single judge bench of the Lahore High Court had convicted Shazia Tariq and Shumail Raj (she couple) to three years imprisonment in separate jails of Faisalabad and Lahore and put their names on exit control list.
Counsel for the couple, Dr Baber Awan submitted before the Supreme Court that according to medical report, both are girls and laws of the land do not prohibit them to live together.
Moreover, they had been punished on the charge of perjury, which prescribes only three month's sentence. Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan observed that perusal of the High Court judgement indicates that they have been sentenced by a summary trial without charge sheeting them.
