As many as 2500 industrial units remain closed on Monday as the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) failed to restore power supply to North Karachi industrial area even after around 72 hours. Industrialists said that there was no power supply even 24 hours before the thunderstorm and rains on Saturday.
The thunderstorm further aggravated the supply position. Industrialists on Monday evening said they had no hope of early power supply restoration. Talking to Business Recorder, Patron-in-Chief of North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI) Captain A Moiz Khan said that all industrial units situated in North Karachi industrial area remained closed on Monday owing to power failure.
He said that power supply broke down about 72 hours back and since then no efforts were made to restore it. The thunderstorm on Saturday played havoc and further aggravated power supply position in the area. Many power supply lines snapped off and no efforts were made to restore them.
He urged the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court to take suo motu acting against KESC. After privatisation, instead of improving power supply, it has been worsening with the passage of time.
He said that the KESC had drastically failed to start rehabilitation work in North Karachi industrial area. He said that the KESC staff did not intend to work even after assurance of police protection by City Nazim.
Chairman, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Masood Naqi said that industrial units in Korangi industrial area were working but at slow pace due to uneven power supply. He said that industrial production has suffered by 10 to 15 percent owing to uneven power supply.
In many parts of Site, industrial units remained closed owing to power failure after thunderstorm and rain on Saturday which could not be restored even on Monday. Industrialist claimed that around 10 to 25 percent units in the area remained closed. A number of units remained operative using their own captive power generating capability.
