Published June 25, 2007 Updated June 25, 2007 12:00am

The death toll, due to the accidents caused by torrential rains coupled with wind blowing at a speed of over 60 nautical miles per hour, had reached 235 till Sunday night. As many as 47 deaths had been confirmed on Saturday night, resulting due to the falling of electric wires, walls, roofs, signboards and trees. Some 18 persons were killed in Gadap Town alone.
Casualties were reported from throughout the city including Hasan Square, Akhtar Colony, Kala Pul, Quaidabad, Bhains Colony, Bohra Pir, North Nazimabad, Kharadar, Baldia Town, Nazimabad and Malir etc.
Most of the casualties occurred due to the collapsing of house walls, roofs, signboards, trees leaving the ground and electrocution. Slum areas were the worst affected.
According to Edhi, over 200 corpses were brought to Edhi morgue till Sunday evening out of which 212 were recognised. While 23 corpses were brought to government hospitals, MLOs confirmed. A number of corpses are still unrecognised at Edhi morgue.
The death toll has reached to 235 while injured were also reported to be over 200. The rains lashed the coastal areas including Karachi again on Sunday while the meteorological department has forecast more rains in the coming 36 hours.
Meanwhile, the city administration removed over 60 trees from the roads and cleared for traffic. Over 300 personnel of City District Government Karachi (CDGK) are at work in different areas of the city. However, signboards and trees were reported at few spots hampering the traffic flow.
Meanwhile, Sindh Health Minister, Syed Sardar Ahmed said emergency had been declared at all the hospitals and Health Department was ready to deal with any situation. He said the injured were being provided medical treatment free of cost.
The members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Co-ordination Committee visited the Edhi morgue and condoled with the families of the deceased. They said that MQM, which is a coalition partner in Sindh government, was taking all out measures to deal with the situation arising due to torrential rains and unexpected hurricane that hit Karachi on Saturday.
The Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation (KKF) has also set up a relief camp at Edhi Centre Sohrab Goth. Meanwhile, Intermediate Board Karachi and Karachi University have also postponed the exams scheduled to be held on June 25 and 26 due to the forecast of more rains in the next 36 hours.
