Brazilian 2007/08 (May/April) cocoa arrivals from Bahia and other states totalled 384,259 60-kg bags by June 17, down 29 percent from 542,129 bags a year ago, Bahia Commercial Association said Wednesday. Bahia state, Brazil's main cocoa producer, delivered 58,912 bags in the latest week, down from 90,966 bags during the same period last year.
"Arrivals from Bahia are finally showing signs of picking up, but still are quite modest compared to the previous crops," cocoa analyst Thomas Hartmann said in a weekly report. He added that arrivals from other states were also on the rise, more or less in line with the normal performance for this time of the year.
Rainfall of low to medium intensity have been forecast for Bahia's entire cocoa region during the week, heavier in the northern, central and the coastal areas. Temperatures should vary between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius (64 to 82 Fahrenheit). Stronger terminal prices were counterbalanced by the renewed weakness of the dollar against the Brazilian real, limiting the progress of farm gate prices in Bahia, which rose from last Tuesday's 55-57.50 to 58-60 reais per arroba (15 kilos), equivalent to $2,030-2,100 per tonne.
