Lightning during heavy monsoon rains Saturday struck a remote village in swat valley, killing at least 18 people and leaving several others injured, officials said. The deadliest strike occurred overnight and Saturday morning in the tiny hamlet of Matta town in Swat district, a local Nazim Noor Alam said.
The lightning struck a village namely Taat Colony in Union Council Bedara, destroying many houses there. Several people were buried alive under the rubble of collapsed houses. The floodwater washed away some 30 houses in the village.
The people with the help of local authorities pulled the dead and injured out of the rubbles. Several people are feared to be missing after the lightning hit the area. The local administration started relief activities and provided relief goods to the displaced people.
The tehsil Matta nazim announced two lakh rupees for the affected people. People started donations for the displaced people. The provincial government announced one lakh rupees each for the family of those who lost lives.
