KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar while expressing concern on increase in dog biting cases in city has directed the municipal services and health department to take immediate measures for prevention of rabies and control on spread of stray dogs.
He said the remote areas and katchi abadies should be focused more where dog biting cases were reported regularly so residents of such localities could be provided with necessary protection from dog bite.
He said this while chairing a meeting in his office on prevention of rabies, said a statement on Monday.
Financial advisor Khalid Mehmood, Sr. Director Municipal Services Masood Alam, Director Food & Quality Control Department Asghar Shaikh, head of infectious diseases department in Indus Hospital Dr. Naseem Salahuddin, Director Animal Welfare Society Mahera Umer and Dr. Isma Gheewala also present.
The Mayor Karachi urged the KMC officials and experts of this subject to work out such a comprehensive strategy and plan to control the population of stray dogs and to prevent the rabies disease.
He said no formal policy was adopted in Pakistan as yet in this connection or setup any target for eradication of stray dogs, however experts of infectious diseases, animal welfare organizations and big hospitals could join hands to work successfully in this connection.
The Mayor Karachi said rabies and its treatment should be given importance as this disease is fatal if proper and timely treatment is not provided.
