BRUSSELS: Eurozone unemployment climbed to a more than year-long record high of 10.2 percent in September, the highest figure since June 2010, the European Union's statistics agency said on Monday.
Seasonally-adjusted unemployment rose from 10.1 in August in the 17 nations that share the single currency, with more than 16 million people out of work, Eurostat said.
It was the fifth month with one out of 10 people in the euro area estimated jobless.
Eurostat estimated a total 16,198 million people were looking for jobs, or 188,000 more than in August.
Spain again registered the highest unemployment rate, at 22.6 percent, while Austria and the Netherlands recorded the lowest jobless figures at 3.9 and 4.5 percent respectively.
Unemployment across the 27-nation EU rose to 9.7 percent in September compared with 9.6 percent in August and 9.6 percent in September 2010.
