KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Monday expressed his concerns about deteriorating law and orders situation in Karachi and made it clear that he wants Karachi free from street crime.
Chairing the 18th meeting of Sindh Apex Committee held at the Chief Minister House here, Murad said concerned authorities are directed to launch an operation against the drug mafia in the city.
The CM Sindh advised citizens to lodge complains on helpline of police and Rangers regarding the menace.
Murad also directed the provincial home secretary to shift the anti-terrorism courts (ATCs) from Clifton to Central Jail in Karachi.
He observed that it was difficult to spare 600 policemen every time a criminal had to be presented before the ATC.
The meeting, among others, was also attended by the Director General of Sindh Rangers, Maj-Gen Muhammad Saeed.
Sindh Home Secretary Shakeel Mangnijo, briefing the committee members, mentioned that no less than 19 cases were being currently heard by military courts and that nine more cases have been cleared to be sent to these courts.
Expressing his concern over rising crimes in the metropolis, Syed Murad Ali Shah sought close coordination between Police department and Rangers to address the issue.
Complaints registered by citizens via helpline with regard to street crimes must be promptly responded, the Sindh Chief Minister directed.
He also sought joint operation against drug mafias and said progress made in this regard must be communicated to him on daily basis.
It was also decided on the occasion that Apex Committee meetings would be held on monthly basis from now on.
It is pertinent to mention that the Inspector General Police Sindh AD Khawaja, who was sent on a forced leave, also attend the meeting and was tasked to eliminate street crime from the port city.
