December 23, 2016 marks the 16th death anniversary of Noor Jehan, known by her honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum. She is known as one of the greatest singer of all-time in South Asia.
Quran Khawani will be held for the legendary singer today and people belonging to Pakistan film industry will also pay a rich tribute to the services of Madam.
With a successful career that spans over seven decades, she recorded about 10,000 songs in many languages including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi. It is no surprise that she lent her voice to the highest number of film songs in the history of Pakistani cinema and was also the first female local film director.
In 1957 Noor Jahan was awarded the President's Award for her acting and singing capabilities. On December 23 2000 Noor Jahan died as a result of heart failure and was buried in Karachi.
