KARACHI: Seafood exporters are concerned about the untidiness inside the Karachi Fish Harbour, saying the stagnant water from springing gutters was causing problems to the supply of export consignments and halting other daily activities of companies.
They said the harbour’s condition continued to deteriorate despite there was an urgent need to improve its outlook to give a better impression to the world as talks with EU team was underway and the decision may have negative implications on the country’s seafood ban.
They said the government should be serious enough to help the country restore its previous stage of export to the EU, as prolonged ban could stir other countries to issue advisories on Pakistan’s seafood products, which could be damaging to the national economy.
When contacted, Managing Director, Karachi Fish Harbour Authority (KFHA), Abdul Ghani Jokhio said the authority had chalked out a plan to flush out the filthy water primarily generated from the trucks of trash fish standing for long day at the harbour’s gate.
He said the authority under the plan would laid a temporary gutter line to flush out the water and stop it from getting stagnant as it creates filth, bad smell and damaging road infrastructure of the harbour. “We are aware of the situation and ready to solve all the problems,” he said.
He said the exporting companies should also share the blame and responsibility as they were also stakeholder of the harbour and business. He said the dumping of solid-waste by the exporting companies at in open was also behind the creation of big sewerage problems.
He said the authority was nearing to implementing its plan to float tender fro the janitorial services at the fish harbour to get rid of the everyday sewerage and other untidiness problems. He said the authority was going to install big trash-bins to allow the exporting companies to dump their waste there so that the harbour’s business could not get affected from the sewerage and other such problems.
