Upper limit of postal order may be enhanced to Rs 5,000

The government is likely to enhance the upper limit of postal order to Rs 5,000 from Rs 1,000 for providing efficient service to the customers, official sources told Business Recorder here on Thursday. The Communications Ministry, sources said, had submitted a summary to the federal cabinet in May last year to enhance value of postal orders through amendment in Section 45 of the Post Office Act 1898. The cabinet, in its decision directed the concerned ministry to consult other public sector stakeholders before taking final decision.
Following the cabinet decision, a committee was set up comprising representatives of the ministries of communications and finance, besides Pakistan Post Office Department, which held several meetings to finalise the upper limit of postal orders. Finally, they decided to enhance denomination value of postal order to Rs 5,000 with the approval of the cabinet, the sources said.
They said the Communications Ministry has submitted a summary to the cabinet, expected to be considered in its forthcoming meeting, wherein amendment in Section 45 of the Post Office Act, 1898 would be approved in the draft bill already vetted by the Law Ministry.
Recently, the cabinet decided to issue the bank-notes of Rs 20 and Rs 5,000, but the plan was delayed due to cabinet dispute on the quality of picture and size of cap of Quaid-e-Azam printed on the notes.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, who appreciated the performance of Pakistan Security Printing Corporation, constituted a committee under his own chairmanship to remove the reservations of the cabinet.
