President General Pervez Musharraf administered the oath to new Chief Justice of Pakistan Nazim Hussain Siddiqui at a ceremony held here on Wednesday.
The President has appointed Justice Nazim, a judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice.
He succeeds the outgoing Chief Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmed.
Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui is the senior most serving judge of the Supreme Court following the 17th constitutional amendment.
Hailing from Sindh Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui was appointed Judge of the High Court of Sindh in March 1992 and was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in February 2000.
MEHMUD AHMED ADDS: The Presidential assent to the 17th Amendment to the Constitution given on Wednesday morning resulted in the induction of a new Chief Justice and retirement of several Judges from the Supreme and High Courts.
The first change which took place was retirement of Chief Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmed and induction of Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui in his place.
Others who retired from Supreme Court were Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq and Justice Munir A Sheikh.
Another Judge who retired was Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari.
The Judge retiring from Lahore High Court was Justice Raja Muhammad Sabir.
Four Judges retired from Sindh High Court. They were Justice M Roshan Essani, Justice S Ahmed Sarwana, Justice Zahid Kurban Alavi and Justice Muhammad Ashraf Leghari.
Justice Abdur Rauf Khan Lughmani retired from Peshawar High Court.
The reversion of Judges' extension of three years in their retirement tenure may bring peace with the lawyers.
