China emerges as top importer of Pakistani marble

 ISLAMABAD: China has emerged as top importer of Pakistani marble by importing about 70,790 metric ton (MT) marble during the period from July to March 2010-11 as against the import of 31,921 metric ton during the same period last year.

An official in the Ministry of Commerce told APP here on Monday that the country earned Rs1,462.36 million by exporting the marble to China during the period under review.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) remained the second top importer of Pakistani marble by importing 2,994 metric ton worth Rs68.15 million during the period from July 2010 to March 2011.

Saudi Arabia was the third top destination of Pakistani marble by importing 2,515 metric ton worth Rs59.53 million during the period under review.

During the period under consideration, Italy emerged as the forth prime importer of Pakistani marble which import about 2,414 metric tons worth Rs51.49 million.

Among other top importing countries of Pak-marble include USA, Canada, India, Iran, Iraq, Germany and Singapore.

It may be recalled that Pakistan is one among the top marble producer and exporter of the world but due to traditional ways of explorations and lake of processing facilities huge quantity of the product get wasted.

Pakistan can fetch more foreign exchange by the value additions of the marble by providing proper skill training to the workers of marble industry.
