Egypt economy grew 1.8pc in 2010-11

CAIRO: Egypt's economy grew 1.8 percent in the year to June 2011 although annualised growth in the April-June quarter was a much stronger 4 percent, the daily Al-Shorouk newspaper reported on Thursday.

The newspaper cited a government source who said the figures were given to the cabinet by Planning and International Cooperation Minister Faiza Abu el-Naga on Wednesday.

The planning minister is due to announce economic statistics later on Thursday. Egypt's financial year runs from July 1 to June 30.

Egypt's economy had been growing strongly before an uprising erupted in January and toppled President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11, sending investors and tourists packing. But economists say economic activity has been improving since then.
