Sri Lankan wicket-keeper and batsman Kusal Perera has been recalled from the ongoing New Zealand tour after he was tested positive at a random drug test.
According to media reports, “Sri Lanka Cricketer has been advised that a sample provided by Kusal Perera for a random testing carried out by the ICC during the recent Pakistan tour has yielded a positive result for a banned substance,” a Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement. The right handed opener Kaushal Silva will replace him, SLC added.
"In view of this and in terms of the applicable ICC regulations, SLC has recalled Perera from New Zealand," the board said, adding that they would test a "B" sample in line with anti-doping regulations.
Perera becomes the second Sri Lankan cricketer to fail a doping test. Batsman Upal Tharanga was suspended for three months after testing positive during the 2011 World Cup. The guardian reported.
Sri Lanka will play two Tests, five ODI games and two T20 matches in New Zealand from December 10 to January 10.
Perera, who made his Sri Lanka debut in 2013, is the No 7-ranked Twenty20 batsman in the world. Perera made his name as a one-day wicketkeeper/batsman, equaling the second fastest ODI half-century of all time with a 17-ball 50 against Pakistan last July.
