BRASILIA: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's chief of cabinet offered his resignation Tuesday amid allegations of corruption six months into her term of office, officials said.

Rousseff has not yet said whether she will accept the resignation of Antonio Palocci, who functions as her chief of staff, a spokesman for the presidency told AFP.

The crisis follows reports in the daily Folha de Sao Paulo that Palocci had amassed sudden wealth, with his personal fortune now 20 times greater than what it was four years ago.

In a brief statement, Palocci said Brazil's attorney general had confirmed "the legality and rectitude" of his recent professional activities, but acknowledged that the political controversy could harm his effectiveness.
