ABU DHABI: Pakistan's ambassador to United Arab Emirates Jamil Ahmed Khan on Tuesday said advanced satellite technology can greatly help in handling serious security issues through surveillance and said Pakistan was keen to collaborate with the UAE in this sector.
The Ambassador expressed these views at the opening ceremony of Global Space and Satellite Forum (GSSF) 2011, which was inaugurated by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The ambassador said the space and satellite sector was becoming increasingly pervasive, having greater impact on lives in various ways including communication, climate change, disaster management, agriculture, security and surveillance.
He said space technology could be best used for tracking and monitoring to check terrorism and security-related issues.
He called for regional cooperation in this field to enhance mutual advantages.
He said Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) was continuously developing and introducing state-of-the-art technologies to support economic competitiveness of Pakistan.
He highlighted Pakistan's National Satellite Development Programme (NSDP) that included Communication Satellite, Remote Sensing Satellite System (RSSS),Human Resource Development and PAKSAT-1R.
Ambassador Jamil mentioned that Pakistan in collaboration with China was launching a satellite this year which will greatly supplement the country'scommunication capacity in the region.
