SINGAPORE: The Singapore opposition looked on course to win up to six seats in Saturday's general election, tripling its presence in parliament, local media reported.
The Straits Times quoted a candidate of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) as saying that the most hotly contested district, Aljunied, had fallen to the Workers' Party.
Independent websites carried similar reports from counting centres.
A single seat up for grabs in the small Hougang ward, which borders Aljunied, was also leaning toward the Workers' Party, the reports said.
Only two of the 84 members of the previous parliament were from the opposition.
Election officials have yet to issue any results but Aljunied, where five seats were at stake, was widely expected to tilt to the opposition, while Hougang has long been a Workers' Party stronghold.
If the results are confirmed, Foreign Minister George Yeo, who led the PAP ticket in Aljunied, will lose his cabinet job.
Most of the 87 seats contested Saturday are part of group constituencies where voters elect blocs of four to six candidates.
The PAP has dominated Singapore politics for 52 years and the opposition has never won a group constituency.
