DAMASCUS: Ten Syrian soldiers and policemen were killed Friday in the central city of Homs by "terrorist" groups, said a military spokesman quoted by state news agency SANA.
"Units of the army and security forces chased the armed terrorist groups on the outskirts of Homs. after the attack they carried out on an army and police checkpoint," the spokesman said.
"The clashes led to a rise in the number of martyrs from the army and the police to 10 dead and several others wounded," the military source added.
"The clashes also left several killed and wounded in the ranks of the armed terrorist groups."
Earlier SANA reported that an officer and four policemen were killed in Homs when an "armed criminal group" opened fire on a joint army-police security forces checkpoint in Baba Amr.
The agency said the bodies of those killed were then "mutilated" by their assailants.
