gilaniPARIS: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said close interaction between the parliaments of Pakistan and France would give new impetus to their relationship in diverse fields.

Talking to President of the French Senate Gerard Larcher, Prime Minister Gilani said regular contacts between the parliamentary delegations of two countries would help strengthen the democratic norms and learn from each others experiences.

He said Pakistan had come a long way in achieving democracy and restoring Constitution in its original form.

The French Senate President referring to the long-standing cordial relations between Pakistan and France said the potential of expansion in ties was still immense, which needed to be fully explored.

He termed the visit of Prime Minister Gilani an important milestone in further cementing friendship between Pakistan and France and stressed the need for regular exchange of parliamentary and trade delegations.

He said France has been fully supporting the current democratic government of Pakistan on several occasions and termed the recent parliamentary exchanges as manifestation of this support.

Gilani said the visit of country's first woman Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza to Paris in December 2009, provided the parliamentarians of Pakistan and France an opportunity to understand each others point of view on various bilateral, regional and international questions.

Gerard Larcher mentioned the subsequent visit of French Senator Josselin de Rohan, President of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, to Pakistan who on return published a report and recommended offering assistance to Pakistan recognizing its key role in the fight against terrorism.

Gilani in his brief remarks at the luncheon hosted in his honour by Gerard Larcher said interaction between the two countries on regular basis can greatly help in promoting greater understanding between the elected institutions and peoples to bring the two countries closer.
