NEW YORK: US stocks rose modestly Friday, with Dow blue chips spurred by Caterpillar's earnings while the Nasdaq struggled after lackluster Microsoft results and a poor Research in Motion forecast.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 47.08 points (0.37 percent) at 12,810.39 in closing trade.
The broader S&P 500 index rose 2.99 points (0.22 percent) to 1,363.47, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite edged up 1.01 points (0.04 percent) to 2,873.54.
