ISLAMABAD: Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan said that the financial and administrative autonomy of Election Commission is under consideration.
Talking to media persons, he informed that the passage of Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2011 with a majority vote reflected the confidence showed on the ECP.
He lauded the efforts of political parties, civil society, media and Supreme Court of Pakistan for helping ECP to work for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
Under the bill, he said, provision of valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) is mandatory for registration as voter or casting vote.
The secretary said that the ECP would collect the list of family heads from National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and start door to door survey for verification in July next.
The computerized electoral rolls would be issued till the end of this year, he informed.
Replying a query regarding verification of degrees, he said that Higher Education Commission has forwarded 59 cases to election commission for verification, among which he said, 20 were sent to provinces.
He continued that 12 cases were declared clear while half of the remaining cases are still pending in courts and the remaining half cases are being heard by Chief Election Commission.
Responding to another query regarding by-elections he informed that it was under discussion that rather the chief election commissioner has the authority to hold by-elections or not.
But after detailed study of all applicable rules and regulations it was found that the chief election commissioner has complete authority to conduct by-elections.
