who-logo-400QUETTA: UNICEF Country Representative, Dan Rohrmann and WHO Country Representative Dr. Abid Nima visited Balochistan here on Thursday to analyze the health issues faced by the people mainly situation of mother and child health and routine immunization in rural parts of the province.

A special visit in this connection was made to Qilla Abdullah district which is among the five districts with low routine immunization coverage as well as other key health challenges.

Dr. Nima and Mr. Dan Rohrmann met with local health officials and district administration authorities to identify where UNICEF and WHO can support and strengthen the current programmes to accelerate progress on mother and child health issues including strengthening Routine Immunization.

Earlier, UNICEF country chief Mr. Rohrmann inaugurated the 2013 school enrollment programme in Quetta. Programme aims at increasing access and quality of learning with the recently approved plan for free and compulsory education from the age of 5 to 16.

"The campaign is a unique opportunity for accelerating progress towards the MDGs for education and realizing the Balochistan Education reform programme and the newly developed Balochistan Education Strategy, Mr Rohrmann said.

"I must congratulate the Government of Balochistan in taking lead to issue an ordinance for free and compulsory education.

This constitutional and legal provision provides immense opportunities to the children of Balochistan to get good quality education in particular for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged," he added.

On this occasion Secretary Education Balochistan Munir Ahmed Badini thanked Mr.Dan Rohrmann for his visit to Balochistan and for the support of UNICEF.
