Police arrest security official for ‘aiding’ US diplomat in fleeing

A security official of United States Defence and Air Attache Colonel Joseph Emanuel was arrested on Tuesday, for allegedly aiding the US diplomat in fleeing.
The accused, identified as Taimur, reportedly helped the US diplomat in fleeing after he ran a red light and hit a motorcycle. Taimur has been arrested on the orders of assistant inspector-general (AIG), local media reported. Directives to arrest other suspects who aided the US diplomat have also been issued.
On April 7, Emanuel ran a red light and hit a motorcycle coming from the other side carrying Ateeq Baig and his cousin. Ateeq died on the spot whereas his cousin was injured. Following the accident, police reached the spot and transported the diplomat’s car to the police station.
US diplomat’s name placed in black list for killing motorcyclist
Muhammad Idrees, father of the deceased, had filed a petition in Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking to place Emanuel’s name on the Exit Control List.
The IHC on Monday reserved its judgment after hearing arguments from both sides at large. During the court proceeding, the petitioner’s counsel Shehzad Akber Advocate maintained that it was the responsibility of the government to protect the lives and property of citizens.
Hearing the case, Justice Aamer Farooq said that protection of a citizen’s life was foremost priority of the government. He said there were also limits for diplomatic exemption.
