The Supreme Court (SC) dismissed on Monday former Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Nehal Hashmi's apology in contempt of court case.

According to local media reports, Hashmi appeared before the top court where the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar took up the case. Hashmi apologized to the three-member bench and asked for forgiveness.

The CJP, however, said that the bench would not spare Hashmi. The CJP asked the lawyers present about the speeches made by Hashmi, to which the lawyers replied that his speeches were inexcusable.

The court also issued a notice to Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan President Rashid A Rizvi for the hearing tomorrow.

SC to indict Nehal Hashmi on March 26 in contempt case

On March 7, Hashmi was issued a contempt of court notice for the second time by the SC after he had again targeted the judiciary and abused it. Hashmi later apologized saying that he could never think of disrespecting the judiciary and court. The SC, however, issued notice to the representatives of bar association on whether Hashmi can continue practice or not.

For his fiery speech last year in May, targeting the judiciary and the joint investigation team members, who were probing offshore accounts of Sharif family, the SC had taken a suo motu notice of Hashmi’s speech. Announcing its verdict, the SC barred Hashmi from holding public office for a period of five years and sent him to jail for a month. The three judge bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, also slapped a fine of Rs.50,000 on him. After SC’s verdict, Hashmi was taken into custody.
