Elon Musk shows off his high-speed underground tunnel

After five months, the renowned SpaceX founder, Elon Musk has recently shared the first picture of his underground tunnel currently being built in Los Angeles.

The tunnel is being built by Musk’s ‘The Boring Company’ that connects SpaceX and Tesla’s Design Center in California. The main aim is to supply cities and regions with these underground tunnel networks so that they can easily transport goods and services and avoid the daily traffic. This pilot project is also to test the possibility of Musk’s plans of digging tunnels at lower prices and more efficient than the current tunnels.

As the picture shows, the tunnel contains paneled walls, cables, a large upper conduit, lighting and tracks. The picture revealed a section of the 3.2 km tunnel, which Musk claims is around 500 ft long. Musk also shared that the first route of this tunnel would begin from LAX airport and run parallel to major Los Angeles corridor, Interstate 405, and north to U.S. Route 101, wrote Teslarati.

According to The Verge, The Boring Company was created as an experimental effort in alternative urban transportation. Musk imagined a chain of underground roadways that transport vehicles and people to and from destinations through electrical tracks containing skates or sled that can travel up to 242 km/h, a type of a high-speed subway entirely for cars. The objective of the company is to lessen the congestion along with speeding up the travelling times, the concept similar to Musk’s hyperloop technology.

Musk wrote in his tweet, “It will work like a fast freeway, where electric skates carrying vehicles and people pods on the main artery travel up to 150 mph, and the skates switch to side tunnels to exit and enter.”
