Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Dr Asim Hussain has denied rumors of resigning from the party’s Karachi chapter.

While having an informal conversation with the media at City Courts on Saturday, Dr Asim said that he has only stepped down from his position until he returns to the country as he is going abroad for medical reasons.

When asked if he had resigned under pressure after meeting Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan Chief Farooq Sattar, the PPP leader said he had not tendered anything in writing.  Dr Asim told the media to probe those who had been spreading rumors about him. “I will do whatever Asif Ali Zardari asks me to do,” he said.

According to media reports, earlier on Friday, a statement issued by Dr Asim's spokesperson stated that Dr Asim resigned from his position as Karachi chapter president. The resignation letter was said to be accepted by PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who said Dr Asim had done a lot for the party despite his health issues. Bilawal had further said that Dr Asim would be given new responsibilities once he returns after surgery.

Many leaders of PPP’s Karachi division were reportedly against the decision to appoint Dr Asim as president.
