KARACHI: Microsoft recently announced the availability of Windows 8 in Pakistan and around the world. Windows 8 represents a fundamental shift in the way Windows works and is far more touchscreen-oriented for use on tablets as well as traditional PCs.

Sherif Morsi, Business Group Lead, Microsoft North Africa East Mediterranean and Pakistan, said that Microsoft would be introducing an Urdu language option as well, expected sometime towards the end of this year. Sherif also highlighted growth opportunities in the Pakistani market.

The new operating system will be available for existing computers in over 140 marketplaces in 37 languages, and retail at shops across Pakistan.

The new OS offers upgraded, user-friendly, optimized, secure and unique features. The software gives users the “experience of both work and play at the same time.” The almost identical user-interface is designed for both touch and non-touch screens. Users can also benefit from the collection of applications on the Windows Store, which contains more than 1,000 applications for Windows 8 licensed computers and tablets.

“The new software is built on the solid foundation of Windows 7, but also reflects new transitions and changes taking place,” says Morsi. “The new OS hasn’t changed completely; all the changes are made according to the customer feedback.”

With Windows 8, consumers can also use "Skydrive" to store their files using cloud-connector, and be able to access them from anywhere on the planet. Windows 8 also provides an upgraded, fast and fluid browser Internet Explorer 10. Not only that, the new USB 3.0 support is ten times faster than the previously used USB 2.0. The full package of Windows is available at $69.99. While existing Windows users can upgrade the software for $15 it can also be downloaded online for $39.99.

When asked about the piracy problem in Pakistan Morsi was quick to defend the product.

“We are seeking progress in Pakistan in this area. At the same time, we are trying to make consumers aware of the value of genuine Windows. It leads to a secure and the best user experience available”, he said.

Microsoft is working to make the experience of the users better, easy and fast. “Microsoft has taken special care to bring the high quality products to compliment the exceptional Windows 8 experience.”
