Tokyo rubber edges higher

Published Updated

Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) futures edged higher on Monday, after hovering at near 5-1/2-month high hit in the previous session, as the risk sentiment improved after stronger US job data raised optimism over global economy.

TOCOM's rubber contract for May delivery finished 0.3 yen higher at 197.3 yen ($1.82) per kg, after staying at near the highest since June 24 of 199.7 yen touched on Friday.

The most-active rubber contract on the Shanghai futures exchange for May delivery fell 35 yuan to finish at 13,200 yuan ($1,875) per tonne. China's new technically specified rubber (TSR) 20 futures contract was last down 35 yuan at 11,135 yuan per tonne.

The front-month rubber contract on Singapore's SICOM exchange for January delivery last traded at 146.5 US cents per kg, down 1.3%. US job growth increased by the most in 10 months in November as the healthcare industry boosted hiring and production workers at General Motors returned to work after a strike, the strongest sign yet the economy is in no danger of stalling.

China's exports in November shrank for the fourth consecutive month, underscoring persistent pressures on manufacturers from the Sino-US war but growth in imports may be a sign that Beijing's stimulus steps are helping to stoke demand. The world's biggest consumer's import of rubber fell 5.6% in November from a year earlier.

The US dollar was quoted around 108.59 yen, compared with around 108.77 yen on Friday afternoon.

Oil prices fell on Monday after data showing China's overall exports of goods and services shrank for a fourth straight month, sending shivers through a market already concerned about damage being down to global demand by the Sino-US trade war.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock average rose on Monday following robust US jobs data, although gains were limited on concerns about Chinese economy and as the deadline for US tariffs on Chinese goods nears.
