Taiwan Sugar Corp. buys corn and soybeans from U.S.

Published Updated

HAMBURG: The Taiwan Sugar Corp. has purchased about 15,000 tonnes of U.S.-origin corn and around 15,000 tonnes of U.S.-origin soybeans in an international tender which closed on Wednesday, European traders said.

Shipment was sought in the tender from the U.S. Gulf between Aug. 27 and Sept. 10 or from the U.S. Pacific Northwest coast between Sept. 11 and Sept. 25.

The corn was purchased at around $252.30 a tonne c&f representing a premium of 186.40 U.S. cents over the Chicago December corn contract.

The soybeans were purchased at around $389.30 a tonne c&f representing a premium of 138.80 U.S. cents over the Chicago November soybean contract.

The seller was believed to be trading house CJ International.

Taiwanese animal feed buyers have been active recently, taking supply cover despite uncertainty caused by the outbreak of swine fever in Asia and the firm trend in corn prices.

Chicago corn futures rose for a second day on Tuesday after the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the condition of U.S. crops deteriorated last week following rain.

Taiwan's feed industry procurement association MFIG also purchased about 65,000 tonnes of corn expected to be sourced Brazil in an international tender which closed on Tuesday.
