SAN JOSE: Costa Rican coffee exports dropped by 22 percent in April, compared to the same month last year, according to data released Thursday by national coffee institute ICAFE.
Coffee shipments in April totaled 135,864 60-kg bags, down from 174,384 bags in the year-ago period.
Costa Rica is one of Central America's smaller producers, but known for its high quality beans.
Exports during the first seven months of the current 2018/2019 harvesting season reached 557,843 bags, down nearly 12 percent compared to the same seven-month period during the previous 2017/2018 season, the ICAFE data showed.
The coffee season in Central America and Mexico, which together produce about a fifth of the world's arabica beans, runs from October through September.
