LIMA: Peruvian ex-president Alberto Fujimori underwent medical tests Tuesday for a vascular problem while he continues to serve a prison term for corruption and human rights violations.
Fujimori was evaluated at a health center east of the Peruvian capital of Lima near the prison where he is incarcerated.
"It was an examination for a vascular problem in his right arm, which occurred the night before," doctor Gustavo Sarria, head of the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases, told reporters. Fujimori "also underwent a cardiac evaluation and physical assessment."
Fujimori, who served as Peru's president from 1990 to 2000, was sentenced in 2009 to 25 years in prison for his role in the killing of 25 activists by a Peruvian military death squad. The deaths were associated with a government fight against leftist Shining Path guerrillas.
Fujimori, 73, is underweight but his "health is stable," Sarria said. He was discharged from the health center after the examination.
Fujimori also has been diagnosed with cancer of the tongue, but it is not terminal.
