Sindh Water Commission was granted an extension up to January 2019 to oversee the issues related to provision of clean drinking water, treatment of waste and clean environment by Supreme Court (SC), here on Saturday.
The larger bench of SC headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar at the Karachi Registry took up the issue of Sindh Water Commission (SWC) and expressed satisfaction over its working, so far. Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah were members of the larger bench.
Petitioner Advocate Shahab Osto submitted before the apex court that the Sindh Water Commission should be granted an extension to continue to work by January 2019. Former judge of the apex court Amir Hani Muslim is heading the SWC.
Osto informed the bench that 915 of 3000 schemes related to water and sewerage would be completed by January 2019 as well as 33 water treatment plants would be made functional by that time in Sindh.
He said progress is being made in the province over provision of clean water after the commission was formed. He said a project to provide 260 million gallon of water to Karachi would be completed by December next year. CJP expressed pleasure over Sindh government's working and said its working has improved. He also inquired about the cleanliness of nullahs which were filled with the garbage. He addressed Sindh Chief Secretary and asked where he is taking them to visit the nullahs. The latter replied the nullahs cleanliness was related to Karachi Mayor and he can brief the court well about the cleanliness.
Mayor Wasim Akhtar informed the court that situation has improved a lot and work is going on to further streamlines the issues. "The cleanliness of nullahs is being carried out and we are working in a better way," he said in response when CJ asked what Karachiites feel about the cleanliness in the city.
The CJP asked Karachi Mayor to complete cleanliness of storm water drains in one month and warned of strict action if the work was not completed within the stipulated time. Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said he would visit the city to inspect the cleanliness of nullahs during his visit of Karachi and would see how much work has been done in this regard.
