This apropos a Business Recorder editorial "Clash of state institutions" carried by the newspaper yesterday. The newspaper concluded its argument by saying that "We are once again in a sorry state witnessing the growing clash between two of the institutions of state, the executive and judiciary. Such conflicts have never been good for the country or democracy. Where the judiciary would be well advised to shun overreach and exercise traditional judicial restraint, the government too should not escalate the war of words to levels from which retreat proves difficult and leads to unforeseen consequences. All political parties must not lose sight of the fact that parliament too is subservient to Constitution."
The Supreme Court's ruling that Nawaz Sharif cannot head party has effectively cleared the air: parliament too is under the constitution. It is about time that the PML-N revisited its strategy in relation to judiciary. It must abandon its policy of confrontation with state institutions in the larger interest of democracy in the country.
