Brazil remained the leader in feed production for Latin America and third overall globally, according to a survey, which described the world's largest beef and chicken exporter as an efficient protein producer from a resource perspective. The Alltech global feed survey, released on Friday in Brazil, estimates that feed output totalled 1.07 billion tonnes in the world last year.
Valued at $430 billion, the feed industry has grown 13 percent over the past five years, equal to an average increase of 2.49 percent per year, the survey by the US animal nutrition company showed. "I would expect Brazil's feed production will be raised over the next 10 years to 100 million tonnes, but this will still be half that of China or the US," Aidan Connolly, Alltech's chief innovation officer, said in statement.
Brazil produced almost 70 million tonnes of animal feed in 2017, compared with China's 187 million tonnes and 173 million tonnes for the United States, Alltech said. The survey data highlights the good prospects for the feed industry, as growth in the sector is supported by higher reported consumption of meat, milk and eggs, which have risen in line with living standards.
Thanks to low production costs in South America, Brazil became a leading meat producer and exporter. Last year, the country's total chicken and beef exports reached a combined $13.5 billion, according to data compiled by trade groups ABPA and ABIEC. China and the United States remained the top two animal feed producers, accounting for about a third of the world's total output, driven by growth in the pig, broiler and dairy feed sectors as well as the European and Asia-Pacific regions, the survey showed. The annual survey, in its seventh edition, covered 144 countries and more than 30,000 feed mills.
