President of Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum (PBIF) Mian Zahid Hussain said that LPG is being sold across the country without displaying rate list while the production of substandard cylinders is on the rise. "This practice must be stopped to avoid mishaps," he demanded accusing the influential LPG mafia of continuously plundering people for earning unjustifiable profits. H urged the government to take notice of it. He said tens of millions of poor and middle-class people are dependent on LPG for cooking and heating therefore, people must be saved from profiteers.
Mian Zahid said that every winter witnesses a hike in the price of fuel and its artificial shortage while the production cost remains the same. "The residents of the twin cities of Islamabad-Rawalpindi paid up to Rs 200 per kilogram for LPG during the recently-concluded Faizabad sit-in," he said, lamenting that the government is not taking the issues of the LPG sector, seriously.
The veteran business leader said that substandard gas was being imported and smuggled from Iran without any hindrance while no action was being taken against the black sheep in this sector. He said that government has recently slapped regulatory duty on the import of this vital fuel which provided an excuse to the marketing companies to boost prices. "Resultantly, the prices have soared by rupees 30 to 40 in different parts of the country while the regulator continues to conveniently ignore this exploitation of the masses," he said.
